Check Out Tim Allen’s Entire Car Collection Right Here. Wow This Dude Has Some Cool Stuff.

I’ve been fortunate enough to see some amazing car collections in person, including some that we aren’t even allowed to talk about, but whenever you get the chance to see a collection like Tim Allen’s you know it is something special. He and Jay Leno have been friends for a long time, and their shops aren’t that far away from each other in Southern California. Both are fairly regular attendees at the Bob’s Big Boy cruise night in Taluca Lake, and Tim is known to show up with the family for burgers while checking out the hot rods. In this tour by the Petersen Automotive Museum folks, you’ll get a tour from Tim himself at his collection.

Here is Part One and Part Two of the walk through of his collection with information on each and every car in the building. What’s funny are the cars that Tim can’t stand buy keeps because his wife adores them. LOL I also like the fact that some of these he’s had for so long that he can’t even remember some of the details and you don’t really car because it is Tim talking about them. Check out the video, enjoy the cars, and dream about having some of them yourself.

Making Formed Carbon Fiber Parts At Home! This Is Super Cool And We Want To Do It!

Making Formed Carbon Fiber Parts At Home! This Is Super Cool And We Want To Do It!

We’ve featured Carbon Fiber fabrication videos from Street Bandito before, but this one is cooler yet. The process for building this small part can totally be replicated for something bigger, and other than the materials there are no special tools you can’t acquire pretty easily. This part is small, more decorative that structural, but ends up really nice and strong and is the first part he ever built himself. I dig it, and this video just makes me want to try it in my own garage. I’ve already been thinking I need an oven for the new shop in case I want to powder coat small parts or something, but this just cements the idea that I need it. An oven, a vacuum pump, and some materials and you are good to go. This is fun looking stuff and with the availability of resins and materials nowadays you can make virtually anything from Carbon Fiber.

What do you think? Would you try this at home?

LT Asks: The Actual Cost of Turbocharging a Big Block 8.1: Should I have built an LS instead?

LT Asks: The Actual Cost of Turbocharging a Big Block 8.1: Should I have built an LS instead?

I’m a big fan of LS engines, and they are all the rage, but some people can’t stand them because they ARE so popular. Some think there is no other engine on earth that can compete with them. I happen to be a fan of horsepower, so I know there are a lot of great platforms for making it out there. With that said, I’m a Chevrolet guy to the core so I tend to lean towards Big Blocks, LS, and small-block Chevrolets. I own all three, in different vehicles, and I have plans for building at least one of each in 2021, including a possible turbocharged big block for a tow rig build. So you can imagine my intrigue when I saw that LT had a new video out with details on the costs involved in his turbo 8.1 build.

Keep in mind, that this project is a work in progress and that this 8.1 has had very little upgrades to the stock engine, as it will come out later and be built to make 1,000 horsepower to the wheels. So don’t confuse this with a build designed to see how much power you can make before it breaks. This is not that, and in this iteration it has very low boost.

Here is the description from LT. Watch the video and see what he thinks.

Everyone wants to turbocharge their car or truck, right? But the real question is what should it cost. If you can buy a turbo kit for your car or truck, the answer is simple, but if you have to build a one-off kit, the answer can vary widely but in this upload, I’m going over the real, out-of-pocket costs that I spend on Uglytruck. The second part of the discussion is should I have stuck with the 5.3 LS that was under the hood originally or was it worth my time to swap and turbo the 8.1?

Chevrolet Corvette C8 Documentary Reveals Engineering Insights

When looking back at the first Corvette Stingray for sale, development was handled by one man, Zora Duntov. Now that GM is finally going up against the world’s best mid-engined cars, a new Chevrolet Corvette C8 documentary reveals engineering insights.

Part 1 of Revolution dealt with design, learning how to fit a V8 behind the cockpit while making it look stunning. Last night Part 2 was uploaded with a look at relentless testing at the Nürburgring. Being the most intelligent Corvette to-date, issues relating to traction control also affect the shifting logic of the dual-clutch transmission and response of the electric power steering. There is no doubt that hotter versions of new Corvettes are being tested also, but the editors did a great job at hiding them. The Toyota Man Cometh: This Review Of The 1993 Toyota T100 Was A Wildly Prescient Look Into The Future

The Toyota Man Cometh: This Review Of The 1993 Toyota T100 Was A Wildly Prescient Look Into The Future

It was monumental news when Toyota said that it was going to step up its truck game in the early 1990s with the addition of the T100 model. This was going to be a small-ish truck that was kind of in its own size class. They had done their marketing studies and determined not only what their own loyal Toyota buyers wanted but also what many people who were intimidated by larger trucks wanted to buy.

Their answer was the T100 which was first sold here in 1993. This MotorWeek review is pretty good because it really shows the truck in an honest light. It was “lesser-than” the half ton trucks and even had some short comings when compared to rigs like the Dakota and others. It was short on power, it was pretty slow, and the interior was cramped, but what it did and what they correctly recognized it as doing was to lay the foundation for Toyota’s truck expansion and while that expansion took years and years, it was the long game that ultimately paid off with the Tundra which has been a success for the company.

The neatest part of this video is the end where they basically read the tea leaves of what Toyota is going to do regarding larger trucks in the US market. They debuted the Tundra about 5 years after this truck hit the market and it had V8 power, larger size, and has been sold now for two decades. The Tundra did not harm the Detroit companies in ways that may feared. Lots of Tundras, like T100s find buyers who are already Toyota loyalists and want a truck that it’s “too much” for their tastes.

The T100 really started the whole process.

Stocking Stuffer: The Absolutely Epic Jason Plato/Matt Neal Interview Inside Of Renault Williams

Stocking Stuffer: The Absolutely Epic Jason Plato/Matt Neal Interview Inside Of Renault Williams

For a kid with a strong racing fascination in the mid-to-late 1990s, you essentially had two outlets if you wanted to see good action on television: TNN and Speedvision. (I’m sure ESPN showed something in between other sports, but I couldn’t be bothered.) TNN was where you went to see NASCAR highlights, swamp buggy racing, automotive shows at the time, and the occasional tough-truck competition. Speedvision, when it hit our cable provider in 1996, was where you went when you wanted a taste of the weird and the unknown. Much to the irritation of my parents at the time, I would be wide awake at three in the morning with the television on, the volume cranked just high enough that I could hear something, watching British Touring Car racing. I loved the stuff, because in my developing mind, it had three things NASCAR just didn’t have: real, identifiable cars; road courses instead of one sweeping oval; and drivers with personalities and tempers that didn’t hold back because it would look bad upon their sponsors. If anything, it seemed like the sponsors were gently pushing their wheelmen to be a bit more…how should I phrase this?…hands-on when it came time to solving disputes.

Over the years we’ve shown you great action from the BTCC, including the absolutely infamous incident at Silverstone in 1992 that saw middle fingers flying on live television coverage and body panels getting smashed in like it was a banger race and not a touring car run. That was the early 1990s…by the late 1990s the two gentlemen that are being interviewed by Jonny Smith were point and center in what many saw as a bitter rivalry. Jason Plato and Matt Neal were names you heard regardless of when you tuned in for a race. Their personalities are so different, yet the same in many aspects. For years these two have battered and bashed their way around tracks, have found themselves in front of the officials and the cameras alike for their antics, and have somehow managed to be friends, even after threatening to kick the shit out of each other after big crashes.

Merry Christmas, BangShifters. Once the wrapping paper gets cleaned up and the kids are off with their new goodies, sit down and watch these two. It’s worth it.

The One, And Only, Riva Aquarama Lamborghini May Be The Sexiest Boat Ever Made

It’s the 1960’s in Italy, Ferrari is the Lord, God, King of automotive and racing in Europe. But, other Italian car companies  were no slouches either, Fiat, Alfa Romeo and even Lancia were well respected in their own right. In 1963, an Italian tractor builder decided to get into the super car market. Ferruccio Lamborghini had a passion for automobiles since he was a young man modifying and racing Fiat Topolinos after WWII.

Lamborghinis was quickly gaining a reputation building world class grand touring automobiles. Their rear engined V12 monsters, which were named and inspired after famous fighting bulls of Italy and Spain. Sales grew as well, even though Lamborghini officially stayed out of racing, unlike Ferrari.

At the same time, an Italian boat designer, Carlo Riva, had a reputation for building world class runabouts in gorgeous mahogany. The Riva Aquarama was one of the most sought after water craft of the 1960’s and had been purchased by the rich and famous. It’s design was an instant classic and has stood the test of time. Riva continued to produce the Aquarama from 1962 all the way into the 1990’s. The Aquarama was a 27 foot, twin engine beauty. They were known for their unique wrap around windshield inspired by the Cinerama large format movies of the 60’s.

In early 1968, Ferruccio Lamborghini came to Carlo Riva to commission an Aquarama for his personal use. But, there was no way Ferruccio would accept his boat being powered a pair of GM based V8’s. Lamborghini put together a pair of his V12’s that were powering the 350 GT of the time and modified them for marine use. One of which was built to run in reverse rotation. They were officially rated at 350 horsepower each. Soon after, Lamborghini took delivery of his personal Aquarama, hull number 278. The result was the fastest Aquarama ever produced. Hitting speeds of over 48 knots, about 60 mph.

Lamborghini kept the boat for more than 20 years before selling to a family friend in 1988. The new owner wanted to use the boat, but the cost of upkeep on a boat powered by a pair of Lamborghini V12’s was understandably high. He had those engines replaced with the standard V8’s Riva was using at the time, presumably marine Chevy 454 big blocks. The original marine V12’s went back to Lamborghini’s museum.

The new owner passed away in 1993 and this is where the legendary boat was got lost. The family wasn’t much interested in the old boat, and it was put away to be forgotten about. A story us gearheads have heard quite often. That was the end of the story until 2011 when a Dutch collector of Riva boats went looking for hull number 278. This collector finally found the boat sitting under a tarp near Punta, Italy. A deal was made, and the third owner took possession, shipping it to the Netherlands where the boat went under a 3 year restoration.

The video below shows the story of this famous beautiful boat, and also shows its restoration. It ends with water testing on Lake Iseo in Italy.

We post a lot of engines getting dyno tested here at Bangshift, but a video of a Lamborghini V12 in marine spec is not the usual faire.

The last bit of this boat’s story we could find was in 2015 when it was up for sale. The asking price was not listed, but it was told it had an insurance value near $3,000,000. Another note, is that the boat did have engine covers with a sun pad fitted when it was originally built, but it was almost always seen in pictures and videos with those covers off, showing off those gorgeous V12’s. We can relate to that.

Nasty Video: Check Out The Wreckage Left Behind After This Rotary Powered Hot Rod Suffered And 8,000 RPM Clutch Explosion

Nasty Video: Check Out The Wreckage Left Behind After This Rotary Powered Hot Rod Suffered And 8,000 RPM Clutch Explosion

There is so much energy stored in various parts of our cars sometimes it can be scary. We see incredible things happen with engines that burn nitromethane fuel and those that are built to tackle hardcore accomplishments in motorsports, but even the stuff we hot rod ourselves is sometimes more powerful than we can imagine. Take this video for example. There’s a guy in Australia with a hot rodded 13b rotary engine who was out just having fun with his friends at a rotary event and at over 8,000 RPM (not too much for these guys) the clutch blew apart and it did a tremendous amount of damage to this poor guy’s car.

There are two videos here. They are in order. The dude is correct when he says that he is lucky that he still has  his feet because when you see the holes the clutch parts tore through the subframe and body of the car, you can only imagine what it would have done to his human parts.

The bell housing of the transmission is completely vaporized and the damage goes beyond the merely external. Whole components like the clutch linkage were blown off, the brakes compromised, and the list goes on and on. The flywheel itself seems OK it was the clutch disc that did all this.

Wild stuff. Blow-proof bell housings, even on stuff that isn’t insanely powerful are never a bad idea.

Press play to see the wreckage left after this 13b suffered a clutch explosion
